Freeing myself from the TBR…

One of the things I’ve been doing recently is getting rid of stuff. Tons of stuff. Stuff I actually like and probably will have to rebuy. This includes clothes I haven’t worn in forever (including brand new items with tags), books I won’t read again, random items I don’t remember why I bought but I seem to own. I’m more than de-cluttering, I’m going a bit overboard.

However I can’t tell you enough how good it feels to get rid of these things that I won’t ever wear or read again. I kept them for so long because they were nice clothes or good books but in being honest with myself, I simply have no use for them anymore.

This includes my TBR booklist. It’s a lovely list filled to overflowing with books I’ve bought and always meant to read. My folder on the computer is easily over 1000 books and they’re good books let me tell you. There are some by my favorite authors and some that have landed on top lists for years. They’re good books! I should read them and that’s why they’re in the folder/on the list.

The problem is that I don’t seem to reach for my TBR list very often and lately not at all. It seems to grow exponentially while I make very little headway into it. It’s a stress, knowing it’s there and knowing I should be reading it. I -know- I’m missing good books in that folder but there always seems to be something more shiny catching my attention.

So, it’s gone!

Well not literally but I put the entire folder on my backup drive and got rid of it on my main computer. It’s no longer the first thing I see when I open up my book folder. I cleaned out my e-reader too.

It felt so good to forgive myself for never reading those excellent books. I know I’m missing out and I may go back in for a book here and there. Maybe more but maybe not too.

That TBR has been staring me in the face for years and constantly making me feel bad for choosing a new release over something in that folder. No more! And it’s a relief to be done with it.

Good for you. It’s hard sometimes. I have a few I have put in my someday folder, which may be never. I do find I buy seven new books and the next seven books I read are those. I rarely go further down the list. Sometimes, but not often.

I would like to get rid of a lot of my “stuff”. Next time I move. If I give something away I “need”, I’ll buy it again.

  2. It sounds very good Kassa. Looking around I can do with some spring cleaning too.

I never buy beyond the books I read. So I buy a 1 or 2 each week and sometimes nothing. It means I have a non existent TBR list, or only a few books from which I know I will read.

  3. Sounds like a weight off your shoulders. It’s so easy to let a TBR list build up and up. and there just isn’t the time to read it all. Even if you were able to just read all day from when you got up to when you went to bed, you still couldn’t read all the books worth reading.

I pruned my TBR list today actually. It must be spring in the air.

  4. There are too many good books for us all to read – people I meet often know I’m a big reader and are always recommending books to me – problem is, they are usually not romance books. I just explain – I’m sure it’s a good book but I have over 700 romance books on my TBR and that’s not stopping me from buying more – I just don’t have time to read non-romance books, no matter how good they are. I choose to read romance because I like it best. I realise this means I miss out on other good books I might enjoy. Too bad, so sad, life is short.

So, all that for this: yay for you! 🙂

Go you! I call it minimization. I’m doing the same thing. It is taking me ages…I still have boxes that I packed up 12 years ago when I went on my OE. But I’m making progress. And I’ll probably end up with an empty space, but I like order 🙂

And I so here you on the TBR list. I have one I just don’t touch. I am getting my library hold list down slowly…maybe then I can turn to the list on my computer. Or not 🙂 Maybe I should just delete it!

    *hugs*

Let’s see if I can leave a comment this time.lol

I think it feels wonderful to just clean it all out. It makes life so much less cluttered and even though it’s just “Stuff” it still feels like you can think more clearly.

I wish I could do that with my book file but honestly I’m just too anal. lol I still try to work on it but I don’t feel guilty anymore when I buy something new. 🙂

  7. Oh, and I wanted to add that I know I had a book in that TBR list, and I don’t care. I would *never* want my story to be a burden on someone I like, so feel free to drop that backup drive into the trash.
