Has it been that long!

Wow. It’s been 2 weeks…really?

I didn’t realize it’d been so long. The 2 weeks surrounding Christmas and New Years is kind of tough busy wise, but I was off work so I should have been more on the ball. In my defense though – life sucks. I caught then the flu THEN strep throat. Yes that’s right. I was sick with both. Although sick I got zero reading done.

Nothing. Zilch. Nada.

Instead I played video games and watched old episodes of La Femme Nikita, aka the greatest show ever.

Oh I did read an Us Weekly issue. And re-listen to Ender’s Game, which always always makes me cry. Poor little Ender. I’m tempted to re-read the series (like I always am when I read EG) but I know it all sucks after this book. OSC can’t write anything else.

I’ve lost touch with the world and have no clue what books I wanted to read.
I remember there being a lot.

2014 started off shitty but I’m hopeful if I can just get through January life will be pick up and get on track again. I may be absent though I hope not. There is a ton of family and personal drama going on and my flu/strep incidents have turned into a pretty significant head cold. Which of course just makes me want to sit at home, play video games and watch LFN.

I miss you reading and I’ll get back to you. Someday!

I’ve been reading blogs but not commenting so I apologize. I did write down every book Jen recommended and laughed at the sprite/7-up taste test while buying 3 books Kaetrin recommended (non-m/m even!). I’m also jealous of Chris’ cats (who seem normal in their insanity).

Hope everyone else had a wonderful and much happier holiday season.

Recent non-m/m

I have had mixed luck with my non-m/m reading lately.

The first 4 books of the Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series

38619Magic Bites – meh. I liked it ok and got into the series. The narrator takes quite a bit to get used to because she sounds like a man on crack but I liked the kick ass heroine. The plot wasn’t anything special or that attention grabbing. The setting is what made me want more. Urban fantasy with a twist.

1811543Magic Burns – LOATHED ENTIRELY. I actually paid $20 for the audio version (I usually rent from the library) just for this book to listen to during my marathon. I hated this book so much. It was horrible. If I had been smart I would have switched audio books but I couldn’t stop running. If I’d stopped I wouldn’t have started again so I had to listen to the entire, horrible, awful book this was. Bad premise. Bad characters. Bad situations, and a ridiculous ending.

4345498Magic Strikes – So you’re probably surprised I managed to read this one at all given my other feelings. However I loved this one. I really did. I had heard the series gets better so I went back to it and wished this book never ended. I think Kate and the writing have really hit their stride. It managed to balance a kick ass chick with vulnerability and flaws with even a love interest and a plot. Impressive!

6479550Magic Bleeds – again I loved it. I thought the Kate and Curren relationship came along beautifully while the extension of Kate’s job finally got some real traction. The family connections from Kate’s past really worked well and gave some much needed depth to Kate’s character. I feel as though the series is taking off and going great. I’m trying to space out the next books when all I want to do is gorge.

I’ve tried several books and DNF’d them including:

1421990Halfway to the Grave  by Jeaniene Frost

I wonder what I’m missing? This book got a ton of 5 star reviews and accolades from people and reviewers I trust but I couldn’t finish it. I hated it.  Bones is hot for sure but Cat drove me insane. She’s idiotic, hypocritical, and stupid. Sometimes the stupidity of her actions would have me saying out loud “of course you’re a fucking idiot.” She gets into trouble time and time again, forcing Bones to rescue her. I thought she was some bad ass? Um, not so much. I prefer my kick ass heroines to actually be smarter, more eloquent, and capable than this one. I honestly couldn’t finish because I kept hoping a vamp would kill her.

18710190 Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Seriously? This is a horrible book. It’s like the author took the previous 2 successful books, threw them out the window while keeping the characters and put them in an entirely new book. I mean the premise is nominally there but it’s so convoluted and stupid. The explanation of the government conspiracy is SO BAD I actually threw the book. I couldn’t read anymore. I skimmed to the end to see what happened then was glad I threw the book. This author definitely thinks she’s some kind of bad ass for killing off her main character in a completely superfluous and idiotic reason. One that actually made no sense. But hey! You’re so cool you killed off your money maker and pissed off the internet (no doubt?). Good for you?

Review: Tarnished Souls: Frankie and Gent

Tarnished Souls: Frankie and Gent
Tarnished Souls: Frankie and Gent by Brita Addams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I thought I’d read something by Brita Addams before but after seeing I hadn’t reviewed anything of theirs, apparently Addams is a new to me author. Great! I’m pretty pleased and surprised by how much I liked this little novella. It’s interesting and sucked me in immediately. I actually finished the entire story when all I meant to do was read a few pages to get the concept. I’m curious to see where the story goes from here and what else this author has to offer. It’s not a perfect story, nor one I loved unconditionally, but it’s entertaining and engaging. It’s one I would read again and would recommend to other readers. Continue reading

Review: Sweet and Sour

Sweet and Sour
Sweet and Sour by Astrid Amara
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

One thing I appreciate and count on with Astrid Amara is her feel good holiday stories. They aren’t necessarily memorable but I always enjoy reading them and I specifically look for this author during the holidays. I think she’s one of the better holiday-orientated authors. The settings always feel genuine and end on a positive note. Sweet and Sour is no exception. It’s cute, entertaining, and has just a little bit of sex sprinkled through the pages. I had some issues with the story and didn’t think it was perfect but it was still exactly what I wanted to read when I choose SaS. So for that I’d easily recommend it. Continue reading

Review: Turbulence

Turbulence
Turbulence by Lyn Gala
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’m a huge fan of Lyn Gala’s works and she’s one of the only authors I tend to buy on trust. I know it’ll be good and I’ll enjoy it and maybe even love it. Turbulence is a good book. It’s well written, intricate, complicated, and has good world building and a solid romance. There is nothing I can overtly criticize except it just kind of dragged in the middle. The beginning sucked me in more than I expected and I was wholly invested in the characters and the world building but then, things got slow and uneven. I guess they had to considering the lull before the dramatic ending, but still. I struggled slightly there before picking up momentum knowing the ending was near. It’s a book I’d recommend to sci-fi lovers but I ultimately didn’t love it as much as I wanted to. Continue reading

Review: Like It or Not

Like It or Not
Like It or Not by S.L. Armstrong
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This anthology has been around a while, but like always I’m late to the party reading it. The theme of dubious non-con is always a hot button with some readers loving it and others not so much. I think this anthology does a good job of attempting to appeal to all those readers – something for everyone – without really gelling as a single theme. I think the stories work better individually or perhaps sticking with other stories closer to their general feeling. For example some of these stories are more romantic while others are straight up BDSM erotica. Like I said, something for everyone, but it’s unlikely that all these stories will appeal to the same reader. It might suit a reader more to pick and choose which of the anthology hits a particular sweet spot. Continue reading

Review: Sinews of the Heart

Sinews of the Heart
Sinews of the Heart by Cody L. Stanford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I actually like anthro books so I was an easier sell for this one. I think it makes an easy and well-timed analogy to humans and their motivations and also because it’s just fun. I love Kyell Gold’s books and was thinking this might be a similar type of novel. I was also looking forward to a young adult anthro book with a genderqueer protagonist, which is more rare. The writing was amazing with interesting characters and a relatable story set amid a post-apocalyptic setting. At times the lessons within the story were a bit obvious and I felt pummeled over the head but the likeability of the narrator helped. At the core, it’s a story about acceptance and identity in whatever forms it comes. Continue reading

Review: The Cuckoo’s Calling

The Cuckoo's Calling
The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read The Casual Vacancy and found it underwhelming to say the least. I was trepadatious to read another of Rowling’s adult works but I’d heard good reviews and took a chance. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed this story so much it kept me thinking beyond the end. I find it has the same flaws as TCV in that it’s overwritten and locaquious to a fault. The prose is trying to be witty but also trying to be way too wordy. It could easily have been trimmed down by half, but I like the bones of the story. The various characters are interesting and the mystery actually kept me wondering until the very end. I didn’t like the ending, too neat and wrapped up, but I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series. Continue reading

Review: A Not So Hollow Heart

A Not So Hollow Heart
A Not So Hollow Heart by Sharon Maria Bidwell
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I wanted to like this one a lot more than I actually did. I had some problems with the character building and scant world building, surprisingly too much sex and not enough plot. I felt the entire story was crammed into a short novella when it needed more breadth to make it work. The outline of a decent to good book is there but I felt mostly disappointed with the outcome. Continue reading

Review: Merry Gentlemen

Merry Gentlemen
Merry Gentlemen by Josephine Myles
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cute, fun, and lots of campy singing. What else does a holiday novella need? Myles is a great author and she’s once again delivered with this entertaining and enjoyable story about a city-slicker who falls back in love with his country ex. The two may live seemingly very different lives but the power of love wins out. The characters are adorable and the story reads incredibly fast. There’s enough minor action and witty dialogue to keep the pages turning. The ending is a bit optimistic and overly simplified to be believed but I like the concept of love winning out anyway. I especially appreciated the touch with the cranky gull. Continue reading
