Review: The Untold Want

The Untold WantThe Untold Want by Catt Ford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Untold Want is a nice, well written romance filled with interesting characters and some very nice diversity. Catt Ford always delivers satisfying stories and Untold Want is more of the same with some nice texture and situations, yet remaining a light easy read. Some of the conflict and tension is too easily resolved which negates the intended impact but overall this is an easy story to recommend for those looking for a classic plot with engaging characters. Review: Morning Report

Morning ReportMorning Report by Sue Brown
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Morning Report has all the elements of a satisfying romance yet lacks the execution to pull it off. The plot isn’t original but the bigger problem is that it never really goes anywhere. The numerous sex scenes make this feel like erotica despite the attempt at a complicated, angst heavy plot. In the end this is an ok attempt at romance but definitely not one I’d recommend. Review: Where the Allegheny Meets the Monongahela

Where the Allegheny Meets the MonongahelaWhere the Allegheny Meets the Monongahela by Felicia Watson
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

This is the first book I’ve read by Felicia Watson but I’ll be really interested to see what else she has to offer. WAMM (to abbreviate a real mouthful of a title) is an interesting story that reads fairly quickly. The characters are engaging and the author includes a massive amount of information on the psychology of abuse without ever lecturing to readers. Instead this information is skillfully incorporated into the story without missing a beat. The conflict is mostly internal which should please readers that enjoy angst ridden men. While that descriptor is right up my alley I found some elements kept this story from being a great read for me.

Review: Commitment Issues

Commitment IssuesCommitment Issues by Wynn Wagner
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Commitment Issues is Wynn Wagner’s third book I’ve read. The first I liked a lot while the second didn’t work for me. Although I really want to like CI, it falls too close to the second and not enough of the humor and charm of the first. There is a definite style to Wagner’s writing that will appeal or not appeal to readers so this author may not be for everyone. The story also tends to repeat information often and add in lengthy asides while the main plot wanders all over the place. On the positive side there is a lot of humor and the story is very funny in the few places it doesn’t try so hard. Unfortunately it couldn’t keep my attention and I came close to giving up. Review: American Love Songs

American Love SongsAmerican Love Songs by Ashlyn Kane
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

American Love Songs is pretty typical band fare. The story is a rags to riches band of common everyday friends that make it big, all the way to the Grammys. The main couple is a best friends turned lovers theme very late in the story and the focus is on the hapless but lovable main character of Jake. This is an easy, light, entertaining story that reads incredibly fast but isn’t likely to have a lasting impression. I had a few qualms with the purposefully mysterious character of Parker but for an enjoyable, light romance this story should satisfy.

Review: Putting Out Fires

Putting Out Fires (Coda #5)Putting Out Fires by Marie Sexton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Putting Out Fires is a short story featuring the main characters from Promises and cameos from those in A to Z. You definitely don’t need to read the prior books to understand and appreciate the story offered here but fans of the series will delight in revisiting favorite characters in a familiar setting. The typical guy behavior about the holiday offers some nice humor mixed with tons of romance. This is easily worth reading and I think will be a big hit with romance fans.

Review: Obscurati

Obscurati (Vamp Camp, #2)Obscurati by Wynn Wagner
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

While I quite enjoyed Vamp Camp #1, the sequel didn’t have the same entertainment factor for me. The characters are amusing with the same dry wit and tendency to tell the reader the story but unfortunately the plot meanders back and forth with no real tension and no strong purpose. Instead this feels like a bunch of scenes thrown together with the right elements: sex, romance, blood, vampires, wealth, power, fights, secret councils, and even death of major characters but it doesn’t come together in a cohesive, interesting narrative. Review: Dead End Job

Dead End JobDead End Job by Clancy Nacht
My rating: 2.5 of 5 stars

This is a short zombie story that offers a clever twist on zombies then ruins it with an anemic romance. I wish the story had stuck with the original trajectory but I suppose just as many readers would have disliked that too. Instead there are a few twists that may appeal to those zombie fans but overall this is a sad and likely forgettable short story. There are a few moments of humor and wit that shine, showing the author has skill with comic timing and I’d be interested in reading something else by Nacht. Continue reading

Review: Pleasures with Rough Strife

Pleasures with Rough StrifePleasures with Rough Strife by J.L. Merrow
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I tend to like Merrow’s contemporary work best for the great comic timing and wit. Pleasures with Rough Strife is a historical Christmas themed story that’s decent but not enough to hold my interest unfortunately. One of the two narrators has a nice accent that grabbed my attention but overall neither character really came alive for me.

Talker’s Redemption by Amy Lane

Talker's Redemption (Talker, #2)Talker’s Redemption by Amy Lane

Blurb:
Tate Walker’s past is too painful to just disappear, even if his dream boy, Brian Cooper, is there to hold his hand. Brian does his best, but Talker—always good at avoiding his own pain—is having a hard time facing the truth about what happened when he trusted the wrong man at the wrong time.

When that truth resurfaces and lands Brian in the hospital, Talker is forced to make a choice. He can either confront every demon in his fragile, bleeding heart, or he can let Brian take the heat for him, just like he has from the beginning. But even Talker knows you don’t leave your dream boy alone and undefended when he just saved your life, and he’ll have to find the strength to take care of Brian when Brian needs him the most.
