Secret Santa winners

Thank you everyone for making the Secret Santa such a success!

We had more than I anticipated join in and most were incredibly generous. Although the rules asked that you gift one book, most secret santas went above and beyond and gave BOTH choices to their chosen person.  So thank you everyone for participating and with such generosity.

And the winners are…

PDF copy of TLC 101 by Janey Chapel goes to Val.
PDF copy of Maritime Men by Janey Chapel goes to Orannia.

$10 Gift Certificate to All Romance eBooks goes to Jitterbug.
$10 Gift Certificate to All Romance eBooks goes to Nichem.

Thank you again for participating! I’ll send Ms. Chapel both email addresses for the books and the gift certificates should arrive in your mail today.

If anyone has any problems or has problems with their secret santa (sometimes the publishers aren’t making it easy) please let me know.

Happy Holidays!

Should publishers reign in authors?

By now the links have all made the rounds about the crazy Candance Sams who went off on a reviewer for daring to give a 1 star review of her book. For those that are new to the wankfest in Romancelandia, the link is HERE. It’s huge and continues on even 2 weeks later as the author just…won’t…shut…up. Even other authors jump in and tell her to chill but she continues to berate readers and reviewers for daring to disagree. The author even goes to considerable length blaming editors and saying authors have “scant” control over such things as scene placement and dialogue.

Yea, I thought that was called writing a book but whatever. This post isn’t about the craziness of one author. At this time I was talking with someone and wondered if Sams’ publisher knew what this author was doing.

So out of curiosity, I sent an email to the customer service at Love Spell. I basically gave them the link, asked if they were aware of the author’s actions and the ramifications it has on the publisher as a whole.

This is their reply:

Kassa,

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We always welcome the opportunity to listen to the comments, opinions and concerns of our readers, whether positive or negative.

As with most authors and publishers, Ms. Sams has opinions that may differ from our own. We have neither the time nor the manpower, nor quite frankly the right, to police these opinions. We like to think that comments posted online will be weighed with the merit they deserve. We appreciate the fact that readers may be wary of purchasing books by authors who engage in indecorous behavior in any forum. Please be assured that we neither solicit nor encourage any attack by our authors on readers or reviewers. We hope that you will judge each of our authors based on his or her own individual works.

Once again, thank you, Kassa, for taking the time to share your concerns. We value your opinion as a reader and appreciate your point of view.

Happy Reading and Happy Holidays!

I thought this was a really interesting reply, which brings me to the point and question of this post.

Should publishers keep their authors from such behavior or let them hang themselves?

I’m not talking about publishers policing every single comment an author makes or even every wankfest that occurs but something of this magnitude has to be more than a blip on their radar, right?

Secret Santa

Over on Goodreads, the m/m reading group is doing a Secret Santa book exchange. I love this idea but unfortunately, I don’t know many of the people in that group and some of the people on LJ aren’t involved in that either.

So let’s do a Secret Santa with anyone who may not be involved with the Goodreads group. If you are already doing a gift exchange and want to get in here, please do! Thankfully Kris has agreed to co-sponser the event also on her blog so you can sign up there too. I’m going to be offering 2 or more gift certificates to ARe for random participants. The more people that sign up, the more gift certificates that get thrown into the mix.

What is the Secret Santa?
Gifting! You buy someone an ebook of their choice and you get one in return. This way you’re giving gifts while getting some too. It’s such a fun concept and I personally think it’s fun to buy for friends.

How to sign up?
It’s easy! Just comment here, in email (penelopes.smut@gmail.com), Direct Message, or on Kris’ blog. When signing up please include the following information:

• Your email or way to contact you.

• Your #1 choice for ebook. This way you’re sure to get what you want!

• Your #2 choice for ebook. It’s always smart to have a backup.

On Friday, I’ll make a master list of everyone participating and send out the name of your Secret Santa the same day. You’ll have until Christmas to send and get your gift.

Author Interviews

Author Interviews

Ever notice that sometimes author interviews can backfire? One of the most interesting things for me as a reader when confronted with an author interview is the responses offered. The questions are invariably all just deviations of the same thing over and over and thus kudos to authors who continue to give the same interview time and again, but I wonder if authors really stop and think about the answers they’re giving.

I’ve been turned off more than one author by their answers to an interview.

With the plethora of authors and books currently available, it’s remarkably easy to pick and choose who to read and not read. With only so many hours in the day, I can easily shrug off one author or another. You always mean to go back and read such and such author but somehow they slide to the end of the stack and suddenly they’re gone. It’s easy to come up with reasons not to read an author, most based on the interest in the book itself. But this translates to online behavior and so on.

I’m curious specifically about interviews. So far I’ve mentioned the negative aspects of interviews but really has anyone read an interview and decided to buy that author’s book? I certainly have as well so it’s clearly a two way street. Authors can lose or gain readers by interviews. I assume the positive outweighs the negative but I’m (as always) curious about others’ perspectives.

I’ve recently been reading several of the RR interviews and on other sites such as Book Wenches and so on. I was surprised and shocked by some of the answers authors gave. Some alluded to be fanfiction authors that get bad reviews but their critique group likes them. One subtly demeaned women readers. Another mocked the popularity of their own book. This type of behavior turns me off an author. I read answers like any of those above and just think there are any number of other authors to spend my money and time.

What about you? Authors or readers..
Are interviews worthwhile?
Do the answers influence your decisions?
Are you careful about what you say?

Note: I’m tagging my fellow reviewers Emily and JenMcJ to spread this meme forth into the world.

Kris’s Rules:
"1. Answer all the questions and give the link to Kris so she can mosey on over and see if you answered correctly and have a sticky beak. [Have a sticky beak? That’s what it says …must be some Australian expression, ha, ha!]
2. You have to tag two other people once you’re done and pester them relentlessly until they do the meme too.
3. Instead of a meme image thing you have to post a cookie, preferably a twofer. It is an m/m meme after all. ;)"
