Review: Living Promises

Living Promises
Living Promises by Amy Lane
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It’s no real secret I think Amy Lane serves angst with a side of awesome. She frankly knows how to make complicated men tug at your heartstrings and the Promise series is a great example of that. Unfortunately (and this easily could be a problem for me alone) the series starts off so high that it’s never really hit that same sweet note in subsequent books. I like Living Promises more than the second book in the series but they both pale in comparison to the first. You can read LP as a stand alone but you shouldn’t. I also realize that I just adore Crick and Deacon so much that any time the focus is on someone else, I just want more of them. This is a fine book but as a reader I’m totally spoiled by Crick and Deacon and realize that any other focus in this series will be lost on me. For the more open reader, this is a great angsty character driven story. Continue reading

Review: Muscling Through

Muscling ThroughMuscling Through by J.L. Merrow
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Let me just say I adore everything about this story. The first person narrator is charming, lovely, heart warming and it would take a real hard hearted person not to appreciate his genuine personality. The story isn’t perfect and the narrator tells you the story as if this had happened a long time ago and he’s telling the reader how things came to be. The tense also changes sometimes from present to past but honestly these are all incredibly minor qualms that don’t stand a chance against such a truly wonderful story. I recommend this easily and think fans and readers will love this story. Continue reading

Review: The Holy Road

The Holy Road (Rifter #5)The Holy Road by Ginn Hale
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Rifter #5, The Holy Road, is a vicious and dark installment of the epic fantasy. It also holds a touch of romance and hope between Jahn and Ravishan. It’s perhaps the darkest of the novellas so far and I’ll admit I was pretty disturbed by the end of it. There is a lot of death, destruction, and mayhem offered in graphic and vivid detail. While that’s not my favorite part of fantasy, the problem here is that the story ends on a bloody note without further action to help alleviate the depressing tone. So I ended the story feeling more morose than the well written story deserves. Continue reading

Review: Shameful Desires 1: Enslaved

Shameful Desires 1: EnslavedShameful Desires 1: Enslaved by P.J. Proud
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Shameful Desires 1: Enslaved is presumably the first in a series of books about Andre and Jeremy. I definitely won’t be continuing with this series unfortunately as the bad writing, cliché characters, and overwhelming sex scenes left much to be desired. I wouldn’t recommend this book sadly on any level either. I don’t think it hits the right BDSM note or the right romance note. It feels flat, empty, and utterly predictable. Continue reading

Review: A.J.’s Angel

A.J.'s AngelA.J.’s Angel by L.A. Witt
My rating: 2.5 of 5 stars

AJ’s Angel handles the tricky and often misused cheating theme. Some people hate this entirely and if so you should avoid this novella. If you don’t mind cheating or on the fence, this one is still somewhat iffy but could appeal. The story relies on Seb’s questionable forgiveness, which is really him wanting hot sex which translates into memory loss about prior cheating. This isn’t always successful and the tone of the story is morose since the majority of emotions revolve around cheating. It’s not a bad story to read but it’s not really an uplifting one with a strong romantic theme. Continue reading

Author Fan Letter Blog Crawl wrap up

It’s done! The month (plus) long Author Fan Letter Blog Crawl is officially done! Did you all enjoy it as much as I did? I got behind a little bit with the craziness of my life lately but I managed to catch up and read all the letters. I also added blogs to my ever over-crowded google reader because some are just that much fun. I do especially like Alpha Reader’s total paranormal kick with some truly incredible covers. It makes me want to read that genre again. Also if you haven’t checked out the letters, you really should because the blogs themselves are beautiful, articulate, and eye catching with tons of content.

I know people can get busy and start to forget but I really encourage everyone to check out these blogs, especially the letters to the authors. There are a ton of new authors and gems just waiting to be found by readers. Many of the authors featured were ones I’d read but stopped reading and it just reminded me that for every author I burn out on, there’s another reader that adores them. So that author that’s new to me may be the next one I can’t get enough of.

We had 34 blogs participating with letters to 36 authors! HERE is the final list of all participating blogs and their author choices. If you haven’t read them all, I urge you to do so! (Can I say that anymore times? Drinking game time…) The letters vary from funny to witty to heartfelt. Some readers talk about how a particular author and books really helped them or changed their lives. Others talk about what a relief it is to have such great alternate worlds to sink into. Yet others believe in romance because of these books. There is no end to inspiration and great new introductions.

Thank you to all the participating blogs and a HUGE thank you to the authors and books that make all of this possible.

Until next year… read well!

Author Fan Letter Blog Crawl – the last one!

It’s finally my turn to wrap up this month (plus) long blog crawl. It’s been incredible so far with so many wonderful authors highlighted and if you’ve been anything like me your wallet may not have appreciated this so much. If you’ve missed any letters, I’ll be doing a wrap up tomorrow or you can go backwards from me to Marie Sexton and so on!

I waffled over whom to write to, there are so many deserving authors. So many books that touched me or slid permanently onto the keeper shelf, it’s so hard to choose. In the end it was surprisingly easy as I looked over to my “new” keeper shelf and one author leapt out numerous times.

Review: The Art of the Delaneys

The Art of the Delaneys (The Delaneys #3)The Art of the Delaneys by Anne Brooke
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Delaney’s series is a very entertaining excuse for some hot ménage sex. The various installments don’t really add much to the characterization or overall plot but the setups manage to make for some fun and hot sex scenes. The third installment is set up at Liam’s place of business and involves an art scam. This of course is just a way for Liam to have some hot and dirty sex with the mob twins but who’s complaining. Review: Apples and Regret and Wasted Time

Apples and Regret and Wasted TimeApples and Regret and Wasted Time by Cornelia Grey
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

This short story is definitely one of my favorites. It hits all the high notes and great details that I personally adore while being short enough to leave me wanting more; the setting, writing, characters, and bittersweet but hopeful ending just do it all for me. This is a short story I’ll easily read again and one I’d recommend to anyone that’s a fan of urban fantasy-esque type settings. It’s not quite futuristic or even magic/fantasy based but the super hit man/cop dynamic gives it that edge and feel without those added details. In short, I loved it and highly recommend it. Review: Good & Hot: Gay Erotic Romance

Good & Hot: Gay Erotic RomanceGood & Hot: Gay Erotic Romance by Rob Rosen
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rob Rosen is an author I tend to buy but his work can be hit or miss. Thus an entire collection of his short stories is along those lines with some hits, some misses, and a peek behind the curtain at what inspires him. Although Rosen always includes romance and a happy ending for his boys, the short stories are geared towards erotica. They’re hot encounters meant to get you off and sometimes Rosen’s prose doesn’t always do that for me. It’s gritty, dirty, and raw and sometimes just doesn’t work while it may for others. This collection is an interesting one and should work best for fans of the author. Continue reading
